At this stage, your toddlers are already able to eat alone, with their hands or with a teaspoon. In any case, it is very important to continue watch them during meals. Infants and toddlers have narrower windpipes than adults and their cough reflex is not developed enough. Supervision and safe conduct during meals can prevent asphyxia. Remember that infants at this age are still learn how to eat. Continue offering diverse foods, but be patient and mindful of your infant’s personal pace.
Foods that pose a danger of asphyxia and should be completely avoided up to the age of 5: all types of nuts, popcorn, lollypops, chewing gums, marshmallows, toffee, jelly beans. These foods have a tendency to block the windpipe, making them dangerous to small children.
You should also routinely cut certain foods lengthwise to avoid the danger of asphyxia: cherry tomatoes, olives and grapes. Slice vegetables and hard fruits to an appropriate size.
