Dental Treatments for Older Adults Covered Under the Health Services Basket
People aged 72 and older are entitled to dental treatments free of charge or with a low co-payment. Eligibility covers preventive and conservative dental treatments and some restorative treatments and is provided through the health services basket via health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Some treatments are fully covered, while others have a maximum co-payment.
Dental treatments with no co-payment from age 72
- Periodic dental check-ups, including consultation and treatment plan, once a year.
- Routine exams and follow-up.
- Two bitewing X-rays as part of the periodic check-up.
- Teeth cleaning/scaling once every six months.
Dental treatments at a reduced cost
- Preventive and conservative treatments such as first aid, extractions, surgical extractions, and more.
- Restorative (prosthetic) treatments such as dentures, crowns, and more.
How to receive dental treatments at no cost or at a reduced cost
You can access these services through your health maintenance organization (HMO) in one of the following ways:
- At the HMO’s dental clinics.
- At community clinics that have an agreement with the HMO.
- At other clinics or hospitals with a referral and authorization form (Form 17) from the HMO.
Refunds will not be provided for treatments received privately.

Not all oral rehabilitation treatments are included in the health services basket. For treatments not covered, the HMO will charge the full price, as with private treatment.
If you are offered a treatment that is not included in the health services basket, it’s recommended to check whether there is an alternative treatment that is covered.
