Second Medical Opinion
A second medical opinion is medical counseling that every patient is entitled to seek on their own initiative after receiving preliminary medical counseling about their illness or medical condition.
When should you seek a second medical opinion
There are several situations in which it is recommended to seek a second medical opinion:
- If you have a concern or a doubt about a medical diagnosis you received
- If you are considering several options of treatment
- If you would like to consult another doctor following a medical consultation you received as part of the HMO services where you are insured or a hospital
- If you have been offered therapy or surgery with considerable potential implications for your future lifestyle, for example, surgery with a prospective risk of a lack of a full recovery.
What happens after receiving a second medical opinion?
After you receive a second medical opinion, it is important that you update your caregivers in the HMO or hospital and disclose the recommendations of the second opinion.
The caregiver team will consider the specialist consultant’s opinion and act in the best interest of the patient to the best of their discretion.
Does a second medical opinion cost money?
Yes. A second medical opinion is not included in the healthcare services basket; therefore, you will be required to pay for it.
It is recommended to check whether you are entitled to funding for the service as part of additional healthcare services in your HMO.
If you have private health insurance, you can check whether a second medical opinion is included and eligible for reimbursement.
