Safety
Toddlers who just recently depended on us or on a stroller are now able to walk independently. They can climb stairs and playground equipment and eat on their own using a spoon. They may also open drawers and cabinets around the home and reach hazardous or flammable substances. It is essential to keep these items completely out of their reach.
From around 18 months of age, it is recommended to encourage toddlers to perform simple tasks on their own, such as eating, getting dressed and undressed, playing ball, or beginning to use balance bikes and playground equipment. It is important to support an active lifestyle, and until age two, screen exposure should be avoided whenever possible, including background screens. If using a screen for a video call with a family member, it should be brief and done in the presence of an adult.
The route to daycare or family care center also becomes familiar on a daily basis. It is very important to remain aware of potential dangers along the way, especially when traveling by car or crossing the street. For safety reasons, children should remain in a rear-facing car seat until age two, appropriate for their age and size. Of course, it is crucial never to leave a child alone in a car, even for a moment. Always ensure that all family members have exited the vehicle after every trip.
