Exposure to Hazardous Substances and Radiation During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, you may have many questions about what you should and should not do. Did you know that exposure to some substances and radiation may harm you and your baby? In general, it is recommended to avoid x-rays and exposure to pesticides and cat secretions. Here are more details:
X-rays
- It is advised to refrain as much as possible from unnecessary x-ray radiation during pregnancy.
- If x-ray radiography is vital for your health, inform the physician and the x-ray technician that you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. In this case, they will cover your stomach area with a lead apron to minimize the exposure of the fetus to radiation.
Pesticides
Pesticides and insect repellent sprays of any kind, including natural pesticides, can potentially have adverse effects on your health and the health of your baby. The fetus is particularly vulnerable to pesticides in the first trimester of pregnancy. In this stage, exposure may damage the nerve system and other systems in the early stages of development. Therefore, avoid as much as possible from exposure to insect repellent sprays at home, in the garden, and when handling animals.
Cat secretions
Cat secretions may be infected with a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. Note that this parasite may also be transmitted through raw meat or fruits or vegetables that were not properly rinsed. Exposure to this parasite endangers the health of the fetus and may cause miscarriage and severe damage, such as blindness, deafness, and intellectual disability.
- It is advised to avoid contact with cat secretions at home, in children’s sandboxes, and in other locations where there are cats.
- Use suitable gloves when working in the garden.
