Engaging in healthcare and social work professions is regulated by law. However, there is no law that stipulates who is allowed to practice psychotherapy or provide therapy. Nevertheless, every professional in the public mental healthcare system must meet the following professional standards. These standards include licensing for professions for which there is licensing or training and recognized specialization in the field of practice, in accordance with what is determined by the Ministry of Health and professional associations in the field.
Threshold criteria for approving professional licensing in a health profession
The legal requirement in Israel is to meet a number of conditions in order to receive a certification in a health profession:
- Fulfillment of the training requirements requested by law for each profession.
- The healthcare professional has not been convicted of a criminal offense or a disciplinary offense, for which, in its essence, severity, or circumstances, they are not entitled to receive a certificate in a health profession. Important to know: Coaches and emotional therapists
Important to know: Coaches and emotional therapists
Some individuals present themselves as “emotional therapists” or “emotional coaches.” However, these titles can be misleading, as these individuals may not necessarily be recognized or certified by the Ministry of Health as mental health therapists. Specifically, privately offered “therapy” by coaches, counselors, or emotional therapists does not indicate certified professional status or recognized training in the field. In some cases, some individuals with the necessary qualifications for mental health practice may present themselves as coaches. Therefore, when seeking private therapy, it is recommended to verify the therapist’s credentials, whether they are authorized to practice the relevant profession, before making a decision based on the information they provide.
