The Admissions Process for Psychiatric Home Hospitalization

The process for getting in-home care has several steps:

During the pre-admission stage, a detailed letter of referral from a psychiatrist is needed. The letter will be a recommendation detailing the need for home hospitalization and referencing the satisfaction of the criteria by the patient and the primary caregiver during the period of in-home care.

Once the HMO approves the provision of the service, a psychiatrist will examine the patient and determine whether the patient is eligible and satisfies the criteria for receiving home hospitalization service. The psychiatrist may be employed by the HMO itself or from an external operator whose services have been employed by the HMO for the insureds (by way of prior authorization). The patient and the primary caregiver will be required to sign an agreement explaining the service and consenting to receive the service.

A multidisciplinary staff led by a psychiatrist employed by the in-home mental care service will conduct a complete psychiatric examination of the patient during a face-to-face session, as is customary in the hospital admission process. If the patient is hospitalized, this examination will take place during the course of examinationl; otherwise, at home.
