Infants need fresh air and sunshine. It is advised to take them outdoors when weather conditions permit. However, until the age of six months, they should not be exposed to direct sunlight. As your infant grows, you can gradually introduce them to the sun during safer hours – before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m., when solar radiation is less intense.
The sun shines and emits radiation throughout the year, making it crucial to follow safety guidelines whenever taking infants and children outdoors - to the garden, for a walk, or on the beach. It is essential to dress infants and children appropriately according to the weather, apply sunscreen, and reapply after a few hours or after sea bathing. It is important to note that sunscreens do not block sun radiation completely, so they should complement other protective measures, including going outdoors during safer hours, staying in the shade, wearing a hat, and wearing protective clothing.
Preventing dehydration
Dehydration occurs when the fluid balance is disrupted; when the body loses more fluid than it takes in, primarily due to sweating. Severe fluid deficiency, corresponding to 6%-10% of body weight, may lead to heatstroke.
During hot weather, our body loses a significant amount of fluid. To prevent dehydration, it is crucial to drink throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Set reminders, take intentional breaks for refreshment, and encourage children to drink water.
Daily fluid intake recommendations by age
- 6 months to 1 year: 1 cup of water.
- 1 year to 3 years: approximately 4 cups of water.
- 4 to 8 years: approximately 5 cups of water.
It is important to raise fluid quantities according to the weather and the level of physical activity, as well as during illness.
Early signs of heat stroke: flushed face, heavy breathing, headaches and dizziness, extreme fatigue, hallucinations, shakiness, seizures, impaired speech, excessive sweating, confusion, increased heart and respiratory rates, or sudden loss of consciousness. If one or more of these symptoms occur, seek immediate medical assistance!
